Royal and General Archive of Navarre

Palacio Real

Present seat of the General Archive of Navarre, designed by the architect Rafael Moneo.

The General Archive of Navarre was created through a Royal Order of 1836 that charged the Diputación (Provincial Administration) with the management of the Cámara de Comptos (Accounts Tribunal). José Yanguas y Miranda was appointed archivist. On his death in 1863 the Archive came under the Secretaries of the Diputación who -busy with their own administrative work- left the Archive rather neglected.

At the end of the 19th century, coinciding with its transfer to the building next to the Palace of Navarre, the archives managed to reaffirm their importance and we would highlight the work of two researchers at the time: Iturralde y Suit and Arturo Campión.

The General Archive of Navarre now comes under the Culture Department of the Government of Navarre and its seat is the Palace of the Kings of Navarre, recently reformed by the architect from Tudela Rafael Moneo.

It is equipped with the latest technology for the classification, consultation and custody of the documentary heritage of Navarre and has a reading room, a large workshops capable of dealing with the needs of any public or private archive in Navarre, photo and microfilming laboratories, assembly hall, specialist library and offices.
