Mineral supplements: Are they really necessary?

Magnesium supplementation reduces blood pressure, although reductions are not clinically relevant. Zinc in combination with other antioxidants may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) progression. Although this effect has been consistently demonstrated in several studies, more research is needed to determine the dose and duration of zinc supplementation. Selenium supplementation does not provide any benefit. Selenium deficiency can be prevented by an adequate dietary intake.
